A $10,000 Quickbooking
“Hi, this is LJ, and I’ve got Kevin from QuickBooks on the line. There’s a problem with our account and they’re proposing solutions. Can you listen in?”
That’s how this all started. A week prior, LJ had renewed his QuickBooks license for $1,300, but a few days later was prompted to renew again. He searched Google, found a QuickBooks support number, and was soon speaking with Kevin, a professional QuickBooks representative.
After initiating a LogMeIn session, Kevin escalated the case to a “senior technician,” who circled a database size in red and claimed 40% corruption. That's when we were joined to the call by LJ. Then came the tech's upsell: In order to repair the database LJ would be required to purchase one of the following support plans:
- 3-year with payroll: $11,949.95
- 5-year with payroll: $16,549.95
- 10-year with payroll: $21,349.95
After a negotiation test, the technician, who previously had to ask his supervisor, offered a 10% discount and offered to subtract the $1,300 -bringing the 3-year plan down to $9,584.95.
We texted LJ: "Are you sure you are talking with Quickbooks?"
"Well, I called them."
"We've repaired quite a few Quickbook databases, before spending $10,000, can we take a look?”
